Be Well: Young and Obese (Full Program)

>> THE FOLLOWING IS A
PRESENTATION OF A PROJECT PRESENTED BY WVIZ PBS,
IDEASTREAM. >> FUNDING COMES FROM THE
CLEVELAND FOUNDATION. THE MCGREGOR FOUNDATION. THE WOODRUFF FOUNDATION AND THE
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF LORAIN COUNTY. ADDITIONAL SUPPORT COMES FROM
THE MOUNT SINAI HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION, ST. LUKE'S, THE
UNITED LACK FUND OF GREATER CLEVELAND, AND RPN
INTERNATIONAL. >> CHILDHOOD OBESITY REQUIRES
COMPLEX SOLUTIONS. THIS IS THE FIRST GENERATION OF
KIDS THAT ARE EXPECTED TO LIVE SHORTER LIVES THAN THEIR PARENTS
DO. WE CAN ASK OURSELVES THE
QUESTION, ARE WE ACTUALLY KILLING OUR CHILDREN WITH FOOD? >> KIDS DON'T WANT TO HAVE THIS
BECAUSE IT IS NOT FUN. >> A CAN OF POP COSTS LESS THAN
A BOTTLE OF WATER. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE PLAYING GAMES. >> IT IS FRIGHTENING TO SEE HOW
IT INSIDIOUS OBESITY HAS BECOME. >> THE PREVENTION OF CHILDHOOD
OBESITY BEGINS BEFORE AND DURING PREGNANCY. >> ONE OF THE KEYS IS GETTING
BACK TO THE SOIL, GROWING THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE INTENDED
TO BE. >> I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS I
WANT TO DO. >> PERSONAL STORIES FROM LOCAL
FAMILIES. INSIDE FROM DOCTORS AND
SCIENTISTS. COMING UP NEXT, "BE WELL: YOUNG
AND OBESE." >> MOST PEOPLE DO NOT QUESTION
CHILDHOOD OBESITY IS A PROBLEM. THE QUESTION IS, WHAT ARE WE
GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? FOR THE NEXT HOUR WE'RE GOING TO
TAKE YOU ACROSS OUR REGION TO A FARM, LABORATORY, SCHOOL,
HOSPITAL AND HOME TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEXITY OF CHILDHOOD
OBESITY AND TO SEE HOW SOME KIDS AND ADULTS ARE FIGHTING FAT. THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL THAT WILL
SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. DR. DAVID KATZ IS A NATIONALLY
RECOGNIZED EXPERT ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY. HERE IS WHAT HE TOLD US. >> EVERY STRATEGY, EVERY POLICY
THAT WILL EMPOWER PEOPLE TO EAT WELL EVERY DAY, TO BEAST
PHYSICALLY ACTIVE AND MANAGE THEIR TIME BETTER, FOR KIDS AND
OLDS IS PART OF THE SOLUTION BUT NO ONE THING WILL BE THE
WHOLE SOLUTION. >>… UNDERSTAND HOW WE GOT
HERE. THE CULPRITS ARE DIET AND
EXERCISE. MORE AND MORE KIDS EAT TOO MUCH
OF ALL THE WRONG WRONG THINGS AND EXERCISE TOO LITTLE. TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA HOW BAD THE
PROBLEM IS, WE ARE GOING TO SHOW YOU A MAP. IT IS A COUNTY BY COUNTY LOOK
THE WAY THIRD-GRADERS ARE IN OHIO. THEY ARE EIGHT AND NINE YEARS
OLD. RESEARCHERS CONSIDER THEM TO BE
ESTIMATES ON HOW THE DATA WAS COLLECTED. ONLY 5-10% OF THIRD-GRADERS ARE
OBESE. IN OUR REGION THAT INCLUDES
MADONNA CANTY. NOW COMES ROYAL BLUE, 10-15% ARE
OBESE. NEXT IS DARK BLUE, REPRESENTING
PLACES WHERE 20% OF CHILDREN ARE OBESE. CUYAHOGA AND WAYNE COUNTIES,
PEER. YELLOW MAKES UP THE MAJORITY
WHERE 25% OF THIRD-GRADERS ARE OBESE. THESE INCLUDE YURI, ASHLAND, AND
SUMMIT. SO NOW WE GO TO ORANGE. 25-30% OF THIRD-GRADE CHILDREN
CHILDREN ARE OBESE. SANDUSKY AND HERON ARE THE
UNLUCKY WINNERS. FINALLY, RED, OVER 30% OF
STUDENTS ARE OBESE. THESE ARE MOSTLY IN SOUTHERN
OHIO. ALL IN ALL, HALF A MILLION
CHILDREN IN OHIO ARE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE AND YOU ARE GOING TO
MEET SOME OF THEM. CHANCES ARE YOU'RE GOING TO
THINK HIM AND THEY DO NOT LOOK OBESE BUT THE REALITY IS SO
MANY PEOPLE ARE SO FAT WE HAVE BECOME DESENSITIZED. WE HAVE LOST TRACK OF WHAT A
HEALTHY BODY LOOKS LIKE. DOCTORS USE BMI ALONG WITH AGE
AND GENDER TO RATE CHILDREN INTO CATEGORIES. BMI GIVES DOCTORS A WAY TO
ALERT PARENTS OF PROBLEMS REGARDLESS OF APPEARANCE. IN OUR FIRST STORY WE MEET
VICTORIA TO UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE PROBLEMS KIDS BASE WHEN IT
COMES TO WEIGHT MANAGEMENT. >> MY NAME IS VICTORIA. I AM 12. I AM GOING TO BE A TEENAGER
SOON. I LIKE ALL OF THE BOY BANDS
THESE DAYS. GUY SINGERS. I DO SWIMMING IN THE CROSS. AND MAYBE SOCCER. — AND LACROSSE. AND MAYBE SOCCER. MY GRANDMA LOVES TO COOK. SHE COOKS US SNACKS AFTER WE
COME HOME FROM SCHOOL. >> I MAKE MASHED POTATOES, CORN,
SOUP. STRUDEL, TOO. >> I LOVE HER FOOD A LOT. IT IS HARD TO RESIST BECAUSE THE
TASTE OF IT IS SO GOOD. WHEN YOU SMELL, IT IS NOT
WATERING. >> IT IS A LOT OF RICHFOOD. A LOT OF STUFF WITH
CARBOHYDRATES. AT AGE 2, SHE WAS STARTING TO
GAIN WEIGHT. AND FROM THEN IT HAS GOTTEN
WORSE. >> SOMETIMES I WILL EAT OUT OF
BOREDOM. LIKE I AM BORED. I DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO
DO. >> SOCIETY IS AGAINST THE KIDS
BECAUSE BOTH PARENTS HAVE TO WORK NOWADAYS AND IT MAKES IT
HARDER. THERE ARE SOME DAYS I DO NOT
GET HOME UNTIL AFTER 9:00 AT NIGHT. SAME WITH MY HUSBAND. >> ORDER A PIZZA, WATCH TV, GO
TO BED. >> WHAT DO YOU HAVE FOR ME? >> I HAVE BEEN GOING HERE
TUESDAYS FOR 12 WEEKS. >> IT IS A PROGRAM FOCUSED ON
CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS IDENTIFIED AS BEING OBESE AT A
CERTAIN LEVEL. EVEN THOUGH THE CHILD IS
IDENTIFIED BASED ON WEIGHT, THE KEY IS PARENTS IN THE FAMILY. WE HAVE A MULTIDISCIPLINARY
APPROACH. IT IS NOT JUST FOCUSED ON
WEIGHT. IT IS FOCUSED ON GETTING OUR
BODY MOVING, HOW WE THINK AND FEEL ABOUT THINGS, HOW WE EAT,
WHERE. HOW MUCH WE EAT. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO HAVE
THE RUSSIA LIST, EXERCISE, THE TIGHT ADDITION — SPECIALIST,
EXERCISE, AND THE DIETITIAN. >> THEY HAVE A PSYCHOLOGIST. WE DO A HALF-HOUR WITH HER AND
THEN WE GO TO THE DIETITIAN. >> ONE OF THE THINGS WE USE IS
THIS NEW IDEA CALLED MY PLATE, WHICH IS A VISUAL THAT HELPS
KIDS AND FAMILIES CONSIDER PORTION SIZE. IN A MORE USER-FRIENDLY WAY. >> WE DO LEARN FROM EACH OTHER. WE BRING DIFFERENT IDEAS TO THE
TABLE. >> I HAVE LEARNED PSYCHOLOGY
THINGS LIKE HUNGER SKILL. BEFORE I GET A SNACK, I LOOK AT
THE SCALE AND SEE IF I AM HUNGRY OR IF I'M JUST BORED. >> IT IS A TOOL THAT HELPS NOT
ONLY WITH THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS BUT THE EMOTIONAL ASPECTS. BEING MORE MINDFUL ABOUT, WHY AM
I THINKING I AM HUNGRY RIGHT NOW? >> HAVING READY-MADE FOOD IS
EASIER IN A WORKING FAMILY BUT BY CHANGING HABITS, AND MAY BE
PREPARING FOOD ON THE WEEKEND IS WHAT I HAVE CHANGED. TAKE AWAY THE COOKIES AND THE
SUGAR AND THE JUNK. KIDS DO NOT NEED TO JUNK AND AS
A SOCIETY WE HAVE LEARNED BY GIVING THEM MACARONI AND CHEESE
THAT IT IS OK. IT'S NOT OK. >> BY GOING THROUGH THE PROGRAM,
IT HAS CHANGED THE WAY SHE HAS BEEN COOKING FOR THEM. SHE HAS A LOT OF VEGETABLES. A LOT OF SALAD. VEGETABLE SOUP. FRUIT. VICTORIA HAS LOST SOME WEIGHT
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY SHE IS HEALTHIER. >> BEFORE I WOULD RUN OUT OF
BREATH AFTER FIVE OR 10 MINUTES OF RUNNING. >> IT IS EXCITING TO SEE THESE
KIDS FEELING LIKE A WHOLE PERSON AND FEELING STRONG IN
THEIR PHYSICAL SELF. >> VICTORIA IS DETERMINED TO
KEEP HER WEIGHT UNDER CONTROL. SHE DOES NOT WANT MEDICAL
PROBLEMS AND THERE IS A HISTORY OF HEART DISEASE IN HER FAMILY. SHE JOINS US NOW TO TALK ABOUT
THE CONSEQUENCES OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY. GOOD TO SEE YOU. AMAZING STATISTIC, ONE IN FIVE
TEENAGERS HAS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. EXPLAIN WHAT THAT MEANS AND WHAT
HAPPENS IN TERMS OF KIDNEYS. >> HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IS
SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT REALIZE WHEN YOU HAVE IT BECAUSE IT DOES
NOT CAUSE ANY SYMPTOMS BUT IT IS CONSTANTLY WORKING ON YOUR BODY
TO CAUSE ALL KIND OF HARM, SUCH AS IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO DEPOSIT CHOLESTEROL, FAT IN
YOUR ARTERIES. HAVE A HEART ATTACK. HAVE TROUBLE WITH YOUR
CIRCULATION IN YOUR LIMBS. HAVE A STROKE. AND HAVE OTHER COMPLICATIONS,
KIDNEY FAILURE. IT IS RELATED TO A LOT OF
DISEASES THAT IS CAUSING HARM TO YOUR BODY ALL OF THE TIME
YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IS HIGH. >> THESE ARE LONG-TERM
CONSEQUENCES. NOT NECESSARILY THE SAGE. >> THIS IS THE FIRST GENERATION
OF CHILDREN THAT WILL HAVE A SHORTER LIFE EXPECTANCY THAN
THEIR PARENTS. >> WE KNOW THAT DIABETES IS UP
FROM LESS THAN 10% TO ALMOST 25% STARTING IN 1990'S. IT HAS TO BE FRIGHTENING. >> IT IS FRIGHTENING TO DOCTORS. WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO KNOW
IS THAT IT IS PREVENTABLE. IT IS EASIER TO PREVENT THEN IT
IS TO TREAT TO THE CONSEQUENCES LATER ON. WE CAN TREAT THEM BUT NOT VERY
WELL. >> YOU ARE SAYING THERE IS A
LIKELIHOOD OF OBESITY AMONG CHILDREN. GIVE ME THOSE NUMBERS. >> YES. A CHILD IS FOUR AND A HALF MORE
TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP DIABETES SOMETIME IN HIS OR HER
LIFE THAN A CHILD WHO IS NOT OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE. >> WHEN YOU SIT DOWN AND YOU
EXPLAIN THAT TO THE PARENTS, DO PEOPLE REALIZE THIS? >> I THINK THEY REALIZE IT
ACADEMICALLY BUT THEY DON'T NECESSARILY THINK THEIR CHILD IS
OBESE. AND THE CONSEQUENCES ARE SO FAR
OFF, THEY DO NOT FEEL AS REAL TO THEM. AND ALSO PREVENTING THESE
CONSEQUENCES ENTAIL LIFESTYLE CHANGES, NOT JUST FOR THE CHILD
BUT THE FAMILY AS WELL. IT MAY SEEM OVERWHELMING. >> I CAN'T IMAGINE THERE IS
ANYTHING HARDER FOR YOU THAN TO SIT DOWN AND SAY, YOU ARE
CLINICALLY OBESE. IT HAS TO BE AN EMOTIONAL LOW
FOR THEM. >> IT IS REALLY HARD. IN THEORY WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE
VERY CLEAR, YOUR CHILD IS OBESE AND IS AT RISK FOR ALL OF THESE
TERRIBLE HEALTH EFFECTS DOWN THE LINE THAT WE CAN HOPEFULLY
PREVENT. BUT IS HARD TO SAY THAT BECAUSE
PARENTS FIND THAT UPSETTING UPSETTING. THEY DO NOT LIKE TO TALK ABOUT
THINGS AND FRONT OF THEIR CHILD THAT ARE SCARY BUT
UNFORTUNATELY ONE OF THE ISSUES IS THAT WE AS DOCTORS NEED TO
COMMUNICATE THESE SCARY FACTS CLEARLY TO FAMILIES. SO THE FAMILY CAN ACT ON THOSE
FACTS AND PREVENT THE CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR CHILDREN. >> THERE IS LESS OF A STIGMA
THAN THERE USED TO BE. >> UNFORTUNATELY, I THINK THAT
MIGHT BE TRUE, TRADITIONALLY. BEING OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE, IN
ADDITION TO THE SHORT AND LONG- TERM HEALTH EFFECTS, IT ALSO
HAS A PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT, THEY GET TEASED, THEY HAVE A HARD
TIME FITTING IN. IT IS HARD TO PARTICIPATE IN
ATHLETICS. I KNOW THAT IS TRUE, CERTAINLY
THE SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM HEALTH COMPLICATIONS ARE AS
TRUE AS THEY USED TO BE THAT AS THE POPULATION GETS MORE OBESE
I THINK IT TENDS TO NORMALIZE FOR KIDS AND PARENTS. THEY MAY LOOK AROUND AND NOT
REALIZE HOW MUCH OF A RISK AND A PROBLEM IT IS. >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THERE IS NO QUESTION THE
EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL CONSEQUENCES OF CHILDHOOD
OBESITY ARE DEVASTATING. 70% OF OBESE YOUTH HAVE ONE RISK
FACTOR FOR DISEASE. WE HAVE A GENERATION OF YOUNG
BODIES HITTING OLD PEOPLE DISEASES. IN SOME CASES CHILDREN ARE
LOSING THE FUNCTION OF THEIR ORGANS. THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO
KIMBERLY. >> I'M GOING TO EXPLAIN TO YOU. THIS IS A NORMAL LIVER. THEN YOU START TO HAVE FAT
INSIDE OF IT. IT LOOKS YELLOW LIKE THIS. >> I AM 12 YEARS OLD. >> KIDS DO NOT WANT TO HAVE
THIS. IT'S NOT FUN. A LOT OF PAIN AND SURGERY. YOU DON'T GET TO DO THINGS
OTHER KIDS ARE DOING. >> IN HER CASE, SHE HAD LIVER
CIRRHOSIS. SHE HAS A SCARRING OF THE. IT IS VERY HARD. MOST LIKELY SHE WILL NEED A
LIVER TRANSPLANT DURING HER LIFETIME BECAUSE OF OBESITY. THE END RESULT IS THE SAME AS
CIRRHOSIS. THIS IS A SHOCK. WHEN YOU TELL PARENTS YOUR
CHILD'S LIVER LOOKS LIKE AN ALCOHOLIC, THEY SHOULD BE A
WAKE-UP CALL FOR ANY PARENT. WHEN YOU LOOK UNDER THE
MICROSCOPE YOU CAN SEE THE FAT AND THEY — REPLACE THE ENTIRE
LIVER AND THAT MAKES IT SICK. >> WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT
MEAT AND STARCH. THE PORTION OF MEAT SHOULD BE
ABOUT FOUR OUNCES, ABOUT THE PALM OF YOUR HAND. >> WE ARE WORKING ON HER DIET,
GETTING HER TO LOSE WEIGHT, WATCHING HER CHOLESTEROL AND
SUGAR. >> IT MAKES ME UPSET CHILDREN
ARE HAVING THESE COMPLICATIONS BUT IT ALSO MAKES ME WANT TO
EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND MAKE SURE IT IS
DIAGNOSED EARLY ON. I'M GOING TO LISTEN. PEOPLE WILL BE SHOCKED TO LEARN
FATTY LIVER IS AFFECTING ONE IN 10 CHILDREN IN THE UNITED
STATES. IT IS THE MOST COMMON FORM OF
CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE IN CHILDREN. KIMBERLY IS RARE BUT THIS HAS
BEEN REPORTED IN DIFFERENT STUDIES AND WE EXPECT THIS WILL
HAPPEN OR AND MORE OFTEN NOW THAT WE HAVE MORE CHILDREN
AFFECTED. >> I WANTED TO MAKE PEOPLE MORE
AWARE OF IT. SOME OF THESE PARENTS HAVE
LITTLE KIDS THAT ARE STARTING TO GAIN WEIGHT AND THEY ARE NOT
WORRIED. BE WORRIED. >> THE LIVER IS ONE ORGAN IN A
BODY DAMAGED BY OBESITY. ALSO AT RISK, THE HEART AND
VASCULAR SYSTEM, AND TO NAME A FEW. AVOIDING COMPLICATIONS REQUIRES
A FOCUS ON DIET AND EXERCISE. NOT JUST AT HOME. THE AVERAGE KID SPENDS 6.5 YEARS
OF THEIR LIFE IN SCHOOL. HEALTHY MEALS ARE NOT THE NORM
IN MOST SCHOOLS. GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN. ONE OF THE THINGS KIDS DO IS EAT
IN SCHOOL. SOME HAVE ONE MEAL, ALMOST HALF
PARTICIPATE IN A LUNCH PROGRAM. WHAT ARE THEY EATING RIGHT NOW? >> THEY COULD BE DOING BETTER. WE KNOW THAT FROM NATIONAL
COVERAGE ON THIS ISSUE AND WHAT WE SEE AROUND OHIO IS TATER
TOTS, PIZZA, HAMBURGERS, THINGS THAT ARE NOT HEALTHY. THINGS YOU WOULD PREFER THEY
WOULD NOT MAKE AN SCHOOLS. WE KNOW THEY ARE COMPETITIVE
FOODS. IT COULD BE FAST FOOD SO THE
KIDS ARE MORE LIKELY TO CHOOSE THAT. IT COULD BE OTHER FOODS WHERE
PEOPLE ARE DOING FUNDRAISERS AND BRINGING IN HIGH CALORIE FOODS,
BROWNIES, A LOT OF CANDY. SUGAR, SALT, FAT THAT WE ARE
ALL DRAWN TO AS HUMANS. THOSE ARE PROBLEMS. AND IT AFFECTS OUR KIDS'
ABILITY TO LEARN. >> WHAT IS AN SCHOOLS DO? >> I MAY HAVE DEPRESSED PEOPLE
TO TRY TO STAY THE FACT WE NEED TO CREATE AN IMPERATIVE TO DO
SOMETHING ABOUT IT. PART OF IT IS IN TERMS OF
GUIDELINES FROM SCHOOL, THEY ARE MAKING CHOICES ON WHAT THEY
THINK IT WILL COST THEM. THERE IS A SENSE THAT EATING
HEALTHY WILL COST MORE AND THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE
BOTTOM LINE. IT COULD ALSO BE ISSUES AROUND
PREPARING THE FOOD, WHETHER IT IS AVAILABLE. >> THOSE PEOPLE ASSUME THE
SCHOOL IS MAKING FOOD. >> THAT IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. IN MANY CASES IT IS NOT TRUE AT
ALL. >> WHO MAKES THE DETERMINATION? DOES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO
DO THAT OR IS IT EACH SCHOOL SYSTEM? >> THE USDA HAS SOME GUIDELINES
THEY PROVIDE FOR ALL SCHOOLS. THERE ARE SOME NEW GUIDELINES
FROM 2010 TO PROVIDE SOME GUIDELINES. AND SO BEYOND THAT, THE SCHOOL
SYSTEMS HAVE THEIR OWN COMPANIES THAT ALSO WORK WITH
THEM TO DETERMINE WHAT THE MENU WILL BE. >> I HAVE A COUPLE MORE
QUESTIONS BUT LET'S LOOK AT ANOTHER STORY. GETTING KIDS TO EAT AT SCHOOL
IS THE IDEA BEHIND THIS PROGRAM. YOU GET THE LOCALLY GROWN
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES INTO CAFETERIAS. THE FIRST SUCH PROGRAM IS
CALLED STUDENTS EATING LOCALLY. IT IS BEING HELD AS A MODEL TO
FIGHT OBESITY AND INVOLVES A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE BOARD OF
HEALTH AND A MAN KNOWN AS FARMER FLOYD. >> MY NAME IS FLOYD DAVIS. I AM THE OWNER OF THIS FARM. I WORK WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
AND THE KIDS ALIKE TO CALL ME FARMER FLOYD. DEPENDING ON THE SEASON, IT
DICTATES WHAT IT IS WE GROW FOR THE SCHOOL. DURING THE WINTER WE ARE IN THE
GREEN HOUSES BUT WE CAN DO SPINACH, WE DO SEVERAL VARIETY
OF LETTUCE, WE DO KALE, RADISHES, TURNIPS, BROCCOLI. IN THE SUMMER WE DO SWEET CORN
AND PEPPERS. >> I WANT TO TASTE THIS. MMM. IT'S SO FLAVORFUL. >> THAT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH
THE SOIL. WE USE A LOT OF COMPOST. WE FOLLOW A LOT OF ORGANIC
PRACTICES. THE KEY TO EVERYTHING IS THE
SOIL. IT IS THE FOUNDATION. GROWING THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE
INTENDED TO BE. RIGHT NOW WE ARE TAKING ANYWHERE
FROM 30-50 POUNDS OF WHEAT — SPINACH INTO THE SCHOOL. I GOT A SURVEY FROM THE BOARD OF
HEALTH AND THEY WERE LOOKING FOR GROWERS THAT WANTED TO
PARTICIPATE. THEY IDENTIFIED THE SCHOOL
DISTRICT AND SO THEY WERE LOOKING FOR GROWERS THAT WOULD
BE INTERESTED IN SUPPLYING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. >> THIS IS THE SURVEY HE
RESPONDED TO. ONE OF THE THING THAT CAUGHT
OUR EYE WAS NOT ONLY THE VARIETY HE HAS TO OFFER AND THE
INTEREST IN WORKING WITH LOCAL DISTRICTS BUT ALSO THE FACT HE
WAS DRIVING PAST THE SCHOOL ON HIS WAY DOWNTOWN. >> WHAT DO WE HAVE? WE HAVE SPINACH. LET US. — LETTUCE. >> WE WERE GETTING PRODUCE FROM
CALIFORNIA, 2000 MILES AWAY. IT COULD TAKE A WEEK OR SO FOR
IT TO GET HERE. THE GOOD NEWS IS WITH THE
STANDS, THIS IS THE NUTRITIONAL HIGHWAY. >> WE HAVE FOUND GETTING FRESH
PRODUCE FROM THE FARMER IS LESS TIME THAN WHEN WE WERE
PURCHASING IT FROM A DISTRIBUTOR. I THINK THIS IS GREAT. IT IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST
EXCITING THINGS I HAVE SEEN IN SCHOOL FOOD SERVICE. I HAVE BEEN HERE 26 YEARS. IT GOES ON IN WITH EVERYTHING
ELSE. WE DICE THEM UP. AT FIRST THE KIDS WERE HESITANT
BUT NOW YOU CAN PUT ALL OF THE STANDS AND BECAUSE THEY ARE
TENDER BECAUSE THEY WERE JUST PICKED. >> THIS PROGRAM ALLOWS US TO
ELIMINATE SOME OF THE PROCESSED ITEMS THAT KIDS WERE NORMALLY
USED TO SEEING. WE HAVE SIX SALAD BARS, WE KNOW
THAT IN OUR COUNTY ONLY A QUARTER OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL KIDS
ARE EATING THE RECOMMENDED SERVINGS OF FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES SO WE ARE PROVIDING ACCESS TO FRESH FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES THEY MAY NOT HAVE OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL. >> HOW DOES THIS TASTE COMPARED
TO CAN'T SPINACH? >> THIS ONE ACTUALLY TASTE
BETTER. IT IS NOT CANNED IN WATER, STUCK
TOGETHER. THEN IT MAKES IT TASTE WEIRD. NOT LIKE A FRESH SALAD. YEAH. A BITE. >> I FEEL LIKE I'M EATING A
LEAF. >> WHETHER IT IS NUTRITION,
EDUCATION, OR HANDS ON THROUGH THE USE OF THE GARDEN, WE NOW
HAVE THREE HANDS ON LEARNING GARDENS. >> THEY ARE ABLE TO LEARN
DIFFERENT THINGS ABOUT AGRICULTURE, HOW TO GROW FOOD,
HOW TO COMPOST CAN BE SUSTAINABLE. >> WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
PLANTING YOUR VEGETABLES? >> I THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA. SOME PEOPLE THINK IT IS BETTER
AND IT IS MORE LIKELY PEOPLE EAT HEALTHY IF THEY GROW THE
FOOD THEMSELVES. >> DO YOU THINK YOU LIKE
VEGETABLES MORE? >> I USED TO HATE THEM. IT'S FUN TO FIND WHERE THEY COME
FROM. >> ARE YOU EARNING AND YOU CAN
SHARE? >> YES, I GRANDMA IS TRYING TO
PLANT IN HER BACKYARD. — MY GRANDMA IS TRYING TO
PLANT IN HER BACKYARD. >> WE NEED TO CREATE POSITIONS
FOR KIDS, ADULTS, EVERYBODY TO MAKE HEALTHY DECISIONS. WE CAN'T EXPECT BECAUSE WE TELL
PEOPLE YOU SHOULD EAT FIVE SERVINGS OF FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES THEY ARE GOING TO GO OUT AND DO THAT. IT IS GOING TO TAKE
NONTRADITIONAL PARTNERSHIPS TO BE ABLE TO CREATE THAT FOR
PEOPLE TO MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES. >> THE STUDENTS HE GOING —
EATING LOCALLY IS A WIN-WIN. THE REVENUE FROM SCHOOL LUNCH IS
UP IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY IS GETTING A BOOST. AND THE FUTURE OF THE PROGRAM
IS SECURE. IN 2011, THE DISTRICT BECAME THE
FIRST IN OHIO TO PASS A SCHOOL WELLNESS POLICY WHICH
GUARANTEES THAT PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE. YOU HAD A LOT TO DO WITH PUTTING
THAT TOGETHER. YOU HAVE TO BE PLEASED THAT
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION SEEING IT COME TO FOR WISHING? >> IT IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND
AND WE THINK IT IS GOING TO BE A MODEL FOR THE WHOLE AREA. WE WERE INVOLVED WITH OUR STAFF
WORKING WITH THE SCHOOL TO MAKE THE CASE YOU CAN DO THIS COST-
EFFECTIVELY IF YOU ALLOW THE TIME AND PUT THE EFFORT INTO IT
AND THE KIDS WILL COME. THEY WILL EAT VEGETABLES AND
THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED. WE KNOW KIDS ARE GOING TO DO
WELL IN SCHOOL AND SO THAT MODEL CAN BE CARED FOR BY THE
LUNCH LADY, BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT LEADERS, WITH OTHER
SCHOOLS. >> AND LUNCH LADIES TALK AMONG
THEMSELVES. >> THEY CERTAINLY DO. WE KNOW THERE ARE OTHER
DISTRICTS. >> WE DID A SURVEY. WE FOUND 20 SCHOOL DISTRICTS
ARE INTERESTED IN CARRYING THE MODEL FORWARD. THERE IS LESS WASTE. WE KNOW KIDS ARE EATING THE
SALAD BARS MORE THAN THEY USED TO. ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE MOVING
IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. >> THE FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM,
THEY HAVE TO AGREE TO LET THEIR SCHOOL PARTICIPATE. >> I THINK THERE MAY BE SOME
INITIAL RESISTANCE TO THE WAY IT IS DONE OVER THE LAST 10-15
YEARS BUT ONCE THEY SEE KIDS ARE CONSUMING THE FOOD, I THINK IT
IS A WIN-WIN. >> HOW IMPORTANT IS PARENTAL
INPUT? >> IT IS HUGE. CERTAIN PARENT GROUPS AND
TEACHERS ARE CRITICAL. PARENTS HAVE TO DEMAND THESE
THINGS ARE AVAILABLE. WE KNOW THAT KIDS THAT ARE
EATING WELL ARE GOING TO PERFORM BETTER AND WE KNOW IT IS TIME TO
BEGIN TO CHANGE THIS TRAJECTORY. >> WE SEE IT AT THE SAME TIME,
SCHOOLS ARE HELPING KIDS. >> YOU HAVE ISSUES AROUND
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, IN 196942% OF KIDS WALKED TO SCHOOL. IN 2001 IT WAS DOWN TO 16%. CUTTING ACTIVITY IS A BIG ISSUE
BECAUSE A SOUND BODY IS A SOUND MIND AND YOU ARE PHYSICALLY
ACTIVE AND YOU'RE GOING TO PERFORM BETTER. >> YOU MENTIONED COMPETITIVE
FOODS. WE HAVE NOT MENTIONED VENDING
MACHINE. >> THE BIG ISSUE IS THAT VENDING
MACHINES ARE PROVIDED AND STOCKED BY SOFT DRINK COMPANIES. THAT HAPPENED VERY QUIETLY OVER
THE LAST 20 YEARS WHEN SCHOOL BUDGETS HAVE BEEN TIGHT. THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE BECAUSE
THERE'S A LOT OF EMPTY CALORIES AND THAT IS A BIG LINK TO
DIABETES, OBESITY, AND THAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS. >> HOW MUCH DOES CELEBRITY HELP? MICHELLE OBAMA, RACHEL RAY. >> THEY HAVE THE NATIONAL IMAGE
TO TAKE IT FORWARD AND WHAT THAT TIES INTO IS A NATIONAL
IMPERATIVE WE START TO CHANGE THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS. $.75 ON EVERY DOLLAR THAT WE
MAKE, THAT IS $2 TRILLION ON HEALTH CARE. WE HAVE TO CHANGE IT. >> THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. THIS PROGRAM ABOUT CHILDHOOD
OBESITY IS PART OF OUR SERIES CALLED "BE WELL." WE HAVE MADE A COMMITMENT TO
SPEND AN ENTIRE YEAR COVERING THIS TOPIC. GO TO OUR WEBSITE FOR ARTICLES,
STORIES, AND LOCAL RESOURCES DESIGNED TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND
OBESITY AND HOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY CAN LIVE HEALTHIER LIVES. BE SURE TO WATCH THE WEB
EXCLUSIVE ABOUT A LOCAL DOCTOR THAT COULD DETERMINE IF THEY ARE
AT RISK OF DEVELOPING FATTY LIVER DISEASE. IT WILL MAKE PREVENTION A LOT
EASIER. AND BE SURE TO LISTEN TO RADIO
REPORTS. ONE EXAMINES THE CHALLENGES. ALL OF THIS AND MUCH MORE WHEN
YOU GO TO OUR WEBSITE. AT THE BEGINNING WE HEARD FROM
AN EXPERT ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY WHO SAYS THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL. IT IS TOO COMPLEX AND REQUIRES
INTERVENTION IN OUR SCHOOLS AND NEIGHBORHOODS. NEW INTERVENTIONS ARE BEING
TESTED BY CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY. THE STUDIES CALLED IMPACT AND
IT IS PART OF A NATIONWIDE EFFORT DESIGNED TO FIND THE BEST
WAY TO TREAT CHILDHOOD OBESITY. THIS 11-YEAR-OLD IS PART OF THE
STUDY. THEY HAD A LITTLE EXPERIMENT,
THINGS THAT WILL HELP. >> MY NAME IS JAKE. I AM 11 YEARS OLD. WHEN I GET TIRED FROM RUNNING
AROUND, HE GIVES ME THAT MOTIVATION. >> FOR JAKE AND HIS DAD, THIS
IS PART OF AN EXPERIMENT THEY ARE DOING FOR THE IMPACT STUDY. TELL ME ABOUT THIS. >> MY EXPERIMENT IS SLEEP AND
EXERCISE. >> IMPACT IS TESTING WAYS TO
HELP CHILDREN AND FAMILIES BATTLE OBESITY. JAKE IS TESTING APPROACH THAT
CALLS FOR KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS TO COME UP WITH WAYS TO MAKE
SMALL CHANGES IN THEIR HABITS. >> ONE OF THE THINGS WE DO, WE
HAVE THEM CHART THEIR ROUTINE. WHAT DO YOU DO FIRST, THE KIDS
DO IT AND THE PARENTS. AND THEN IT POPS OUT SOME OF THE
THINGS THEY DO THAT ARE NOT HEALTHY OR OPPORTUNITIES THEY
COULD FIT SOMETHING IN THAT WOULD BE HEALTHIER. CAN WE START WITH YOU? TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN
WORKING ON. >> THEY GO THROUGH DESIGNED
EXPERIMENTS TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT. THAT WOULD BE MORE HEALTHY FOR
THEM. WE LET THEM DO EXPERIMENTS
AROUND TO DIET, EXERCISE, INCLUDING REDUCING SEDENTARY
ACTIVITIES, SCREEN TIME ON TVS. ALSO SLEEP IS AN IMPORTANT
BEHAVIOR WE HAVE THEM WORK ON AND THEN STRESS MANAGEMENT. >> I LEARNED THE WORD SEDENTARY. THAT IS LIKE NOT MOVING, SITTING
DOING NOTHING. I AM TRYING TO CUT MY TV TIME. >> JAKE CHOSE TO FOCUS ON
EXERCISE AND SLEEP. >> THE SLEEP PART WAS A SHOCK
BECAUSE I WAS THINKING HE WAS GETTING REGULAR SLEEP. WE KNOW CHILDREN WHO GET LESS
THAN 5.5 HOURS OF SLEEP ARE MORE LIKELY TO NOT MANAGE THEIR
WEIGHT WELL AND THE OBESE. >> ONE ISSUE HAS TO DO WITH THE
BLUE LIGHT EMITTED FROM TELEVISION SCREENS. IT ACTS AS A STIMULUS. HIS EXPERIMENT CALLS FOR HIM TO
MENTOR THE TV IS OFF BEFORE HE GOES TO BED. THE FAMILY DOG IS ANOTHER
EXPERIMENT. >> WE WAKE UP IN THE MORNING,
WALK THE DOG, GO STRAIGHT TO WATCHING TV BUT REALLY WE ARE
TRYING TO CHANGE THAT. IT'S FUN BECAUSE THE DOG IS
ENJOYING IT. AND YOU CAN ENJOY IT BECAUSE
YOU'RE — YOU KNOW YOUR DOG IS HAVING FUN. I TRY TO WALK THE DOG FARTHER
DISTANCES. >> THE FACT HE THOUGHT OF THIS
HIMSELF MAY BE THE MAGIC BEHIND THE NEW APPROACH TO FIGHTING
OBESITY. >> IT COMES FROM THEM. IT IS THEIR ENERGY AND THEIR
FAMILY. THEY OWN IT. WHILE JAKE AND HIS FAMILY ARE
HAVING SOME SUCCESS, THEY ADMIT CHANGE IS HARD. SO IS BATTLING WEIGHT. >> IT IS A STRUGGLE FOR JAKE AND
MYSELF. BUT EACH DAY, WE TAKE IT ONE DAY
AT A TIME AND TRY TO DO A NEW THING. >> YOU WANT TO PROTECT THEM. YOU DON'T WANT KIDS TO PICK ON
THEM. BUT YOU WANT TO LIKE YOURSELF,
NOT WHETHER OTHER PEOPLE LIKE YOU. YOU WANT THEM TO BE ACCEPTED. IT'S SOMETHING THEY FEEL THEY
WANT TO DO. >> PART OF THE IMPACT STUDY HAS
THESE COOL COMPONENT. SOME RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS ARE
TAKING PART IN THE WE RUN THE CITY PROGRAM. IT TRAINS THE TEAMS OF STUDENTS
TO RUN ALL OR PART OF THE CLEVELAND MARATHON. >> I AM PROUD OF HIM, BEING ONE
OF THE BIGGER KIDS IN HIS SCHOOL. IT TAKES COURAGE, JUST TO KEEP
GOING, NO MATTER WHAT. >> STEP UP, STEPPED DOWN. >> JAKE AND HIS FAMILY ARE
FOCUSING ON EXPERIENCE BUT IMPACT IS A MASSIVE STUDY THAT
INCLUDES HUNDREDS OF LOCAL KIDS. AFTER THREE YEARS, RESEARCHERS
WILL FIGURE OUT WHICH APPROACH HELPS THE MOST CHILDREN LOSE
THE MOST WEIGHT. IN THE MEANTIME, SOME OF HIS
EXPERIMENTS ARE PAYING OFF. AT THE 2013 CLEVELAND MARATHON,
AND JAKE RAN A 1.2 MILE STRETCH OF THE RACE. >> MY FRIENDS WERE ENCOURAGING
ME. IT WAS FUN. >> I AM GLAD WE MADE IT TO THE
FINISH LINE. HE ENCOURAGED THE WHOLE FAMILY
TO GET UP AND RUN EVERY DAY. >> ANYTHING HE PUTS HIS MIND TO
HE CAN DO. IF HE WANTS TO LOSE THE WEIGHT,
HE CAN DO IT. >> THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS I
WANT TO DO IN LIFE. >> SOMETHING ELSE RESEARCHERS
ARE LOOKING AT OUR THINGS THAT SABOTAGE. WHEN IS EXEMPT — EXAMPLE IS
KIDS WERE THERE A LOT OF FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS AND LIMITED
ACCESS TO FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. JOINING US NOW TO TALK ABOUT
THIS IS THE SENIOR PHYSICIAN FOR QUALITY AT KAISER
PERMANENTE. THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US. WE TALK ABOUT KIDS AND BEING
PRISONERS. THEY DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE. THEY DO NOT CHOOSE WHERE THEY
ARE GOING TO LIVE AND GO TO SCHOOL. ENVIRONMENT IS IMPORTANT. >> CHILDREN GO FROM HOME TO
SCHOOL TO THEIR COMMUNITY AND EACH ONE OF THEM IS INFLUENCED
BY THE CHOICES THEY MAKE IN TERMS OF HEALTHY EATING AND
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. >> IN TERMS OF FIGHTING OBESITY,
THE OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME OBESE IS RIGHT THERE. DO THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO
DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT? >> YOU HAVE TO THINK THE CHOICE
YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE. WHEN YOU ARE IN AN ENVIRONMENT
WHERE THERE ARE NOT MANY CHOICES, THERE ARE SOME CHOICES
YOU MAY HAVE TO SEARCH HARDER TO MAKE A BETTER CHOICE. >> WE TALK ABOUT THE
NEIGHBORHOOD AND ABOUT CHURCH, SCHOOL, ANY CLUBS, IT ALL TIES
IN. >> EXACTLY. DEALING WITH OBESITY IS A
COMMUNITY EFFORT. IT IS SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES A
PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE. IT INVOLVES NOT ONLY THE HOME
AND THE SCHOOL, CHURCH, ALL HAVE TO HAVE A STRATEGY TO ACT ON TO
MAKE IT HAPPEN FOR A FAMILY TO BE SUCCESSFUL. >> HOW CAN PARENTS CHANGE THAT
ENVIRONMENT? >> ONE WAY IS FOR A FAMILY TO
DO A FOOD INVENTORY. OPENED THE PANTRY, FIND OUT
WHAT IS THERE, PULL IT OUT AND LOOK AT WHAT TYPES OF FOOD YOU
ARE EATING. PAY ATTENTION TO LABELS. YOU MAY NOT REALIZE YOU'RE
CONSUMING FOOD THAT HAS A LOT OF CALORIES AND FEW NUTRIENTS. IT GIVES A FAMILY AN
OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE EATING. FAMILIES CAN BEGIN TO FOCUS ON
MOVEMENT. GETTING AWAY FROM TELEVISION AND
COMPUTERS AND FOCUS ON ACTIVITIES TOGETHER AND BEGIN
TO SPEND MORE TIME ON ACTIVITIES. CHILDREN NEED 60 MINUTES OF
ACTIVITY PER DAY. FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. WE ARE FINDING THAT PEOPLE NEED
TO COME UP WITH THEIR OWN SOLUTIONS. IF YOU ALLOW THEM TO MAKE THOSE
SOLUTIONS, THEY WILL FIND WHAT WORKS BEST FOR THEM. >> IF YOU AND I SAY YOU HAVE TO
EAT WELL AND WE ARE THERE WITH A BAG OF CHIPS —
>> YOU HAVE TO MODEL. CHILDREN WILL MODEL WHAT YOU DO. IF YOU ARE DOING THE WRONG
THINGS, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. OBESITY IS A FAMILY ISSUE. YOU MUST BEGIN TO FOCUS ON THE
FAMILY IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL. >> IS IT DIFFICULT TO CHANGE
THESE FACTORS? >> IT IS HARD BUT CONVENIENCE
IS PART OF MODERNITY. WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THINGS WE
CAN DO THAT ARE ACTUALLY HARMFUL TO US. CHANGING LIFESTYLES IS
IMPORTANT. DIETING IS THE WRONG WORD. IT IS REALLY ABOUT CHANGING A
LIFESTYLE BECAUSE THE THINGS YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IS NOT
SOMETHING YOU DO FOR THE WEEK OR 90 DAYS. >> IS IT HARD TO STRESS THE IDEA
ENVIRONMENT MATTERS? >> A LOT OF THIS ACTIVITY IS
PASSIVE. PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE THIS IS
GOING ON. THEY ARE NOT AWARE THEY ARE NOT
PARTICIPATING IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. ABOUT HEALTHY EATING. IT SEEMS ALMOST NEXT TO
IMPOSSIBLE BUT BY GIVING THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO SOLVE THESE
PROBLEMS THEY CAN COME UP WITH REASONABLE SOLUTIONS. >> THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
TODAY. WE OFTEN HEAR OVERWEIGHT ADULTS
SAY OBESITY RUNS IN THE FAMILY AND IT IS TRUE SOME ARE
GENETICALLY PROGRAMMED TO GAIN WEIGHT. SOME OF THEM ARE A PRODUCT OF
EVOLUTION WHEN FOOD WAS SCARCE AND IT WAS NECESSARY FOR HUMANS
TO STORE FAT. BUT MODERN-DAY FACTORS LIKE TOO
MUCH FAST FOOD AND TOO LITTLE EXERCISE CHANGED THE DNA AND
SOME OF THESE CHANGES MAY START IN THE ROOM. AS WE SEE, OVERWEIGHT AND OBESE
WOMEN MAY BE UNINTENTIONALLY PROGRAMMING THEIR FETUS TO
BECOME A FAT CHILD. >> MY NAME IS RIHANNA AND I AM
10 YEARS OLD. ME AND MY MOM ARE TRYING TO LOSE
WEIGHT. WE HAVE A COMPETITION. I CAN'T EAT SUGAR OR NOTHING
LIKE THAT. >> WE DID THINGS AS A JOINT
EFFORT WITH EACH OTHER TO HELP EACH OTHER ALONG THE WAY. OUR PEDIATRICIAN BROUGHT UP THIS
BEFORE THAT WE NEED TO GET ON TOP OF WATCHING HER DIET BECAUSE
SHE IS IN THE 95TH PERCENTILE. BETWEEN 25% AND 50%. SHE WEIGHS 106 POUNDS. SHE IS NOT EMBARRASSED. WE SIT AND JOKE WITH EACH OTHER
WHEN WE WORK OUT SOMETIMES. WE DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONAL
BECAUSE WE RECOGNIZE IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. >> YOU ARE A MOTHER-DAUGHTER
TEAM GOING AT IT. >> YOU ARE HERE TO DO A FOLLOW-
UP ON THE STUDY. >> THEY ARE ALSO A TEAM OF FOR
MEDICAL RESEARCH. IT BEGAN 10 YEARS AGO WHEN SHE
WAS DEVELOPING INSIDE OF HER MOTHER'S WOMB. SHE AGREED TO BE IN A RESEARCH
STUDY. THE DOCTORS CHECKED HER WEIGHT
AND OTHER THINGS. NOW RESEARCHERS WANT TO KNOW HOW
SUCH ISSUES MAY IMPACT CHILDREN NOW, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO
WEIGHT. >> THEY CAN TELL ASK WHICH
RICKS FACTORS ARE GOING TO BE IMPORTANT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF
SOMETHING LIKE OBESITY. IT WAS OF THE MOTHER'S WEIGHT
BEFORE SHE GOT PREGNANT? WAS AT HER DIABETIC STATUS
DURING PREGNANCY? >> THIS DOCTOR IS RESEARCHING
WAYS TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITY AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE
STAGE. IN THE WOMB. >> IT IS DIFFERENT IF A WOMAN
IS OVERWEIGHT OR NORMAL WEIGHT. >> TERESA WAS HEAVIER WHEN SHE
GOT PREGNANT. ONE THING SHE IS LOOKING AT IS
WHETHER THAT IS RELATED TO WHAT IS GOING ON TODAY. >> GO AHEAD AND TURN AROUND SO I
CAN SEE YOUR SHOULDER BLADE IN THE BACK OF YOUR ARM. >> TIME WILL TELL. THE STUDY WILL ENROLL 300
MOTHERS AND CHILDREN AND LAST FIVE YEARS. MEANWHILE, HIS TEAM IS WORKING
ON ANOTHER SET OF STUDIES. >> I HAVE THREE SAMPLES FROM
PATIENTS TO COMPARE. >> THEY ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT
WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE OF THE BODY OF LEAN VERSUS OBESE PREGNANT
WOMEN. SOME AGREED TO DONATE TISSUE. IN ONE EXPERIMENT, SCIENTISTS
GRIND UP PIECES OF FAT. IN ANOTHER, THEY SLICE OFF
SLIVERS OF PLACENTA. >> WE ARE GOING IT IN VITRO BUT
WE ARE TRYING TO REPLICATE CONDITIONS WOMEN WHO ARE OBESE
MIGHT HAVE DURING PREGNANCY. >> THE ENVIRONMENT A WOMAN HAS
IN HER BLOODSTREAM, HER NUTRIENTS, HER GLUCOSE AND
SUGAR, CAN AFFECT THE WAY THAT THE FETUS DEVELOPS. >> HE VIEWS THE PROBLEM OF
CHILDHOOD OBESITY AS A CONTINUUM OF WHAT HAPPENS
BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER PREGNANCY. FOR YEARS DOCTORS HAVE WARNED
WOMEN, DON'T GAIN TOO MUCH WEIGHT DURING PREGNANCY BUT THE
MORE IMPORTANT ISSUE MAY BE HOW MUCH A WOMAN WAYS BEFORE SHE IS
PREGNANT. >> RETHINK THE RELATIONSHIP
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PREVIEW PREGNANT SEE — WE THINK THE
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRE- PREGNANCY IS DIFFERENT. FOR EXAMPLE, THAT ENVIRONMENT
AFFECTS THE WAY THE PLACENTA GROWS. THE PLACENTA IS IMPORTANT FOR
NUTRIENTS, AND HOW BABIES GROW. HOW YOU PROGRAM THAT PLACENTA
MAY HAVE AN IMPORTANT OUTCOME 6, 9 MONTHS LATER. IT EXISTS EARLIER. >> FOR YEARS, WOMEN HAVE BEEN
ADVISED NOT TO SMOKE WERE TRAINED. NOW IT IS TIME TO ADD FAT TO
THE LIST. >> SMOKING DURING PREGNANCY IS
NOT HEALTHY. DRINKING IS NOT HEALTHY. THE NEXT THING IS THAT GETTING
TO A GOOD WEIGHT AND A GOOD DIET AND EXERCISE IS ALSO ANOTHER
HEALTH COMPONENT TO HAVING A HEALTHY BABY. AS MUCH AS THESE OTHER THINGS. IT REALLY DOES HAVE POTENTIAL
BENEFITS, NOT ONLY SHORT-TERM, BUT RELATIVE TO THE PROBLEM OF
CHILDHOOD OBESITY. >> WHILE HE CONTINUES HIS
RESEARCH, THEY CONTINUE THEIR OWN QUEST. THEY ARE NOT WAITING ON RESULTS
TO MANAGE HER WEIGHT PROBLEM. >> THIS IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO
DO. HOW COME YOU ARE DETERMINED? >> I DO NOT WANT TO GET
DIABETES. >> WE DO NOT WANT THE HARD
PROBLEMS, NONE OF THOSE ISSUES. >> ONE THING THAT IS IMPORTANT
TO MENTION, JUST BECAUSE YOU MAY BE HEALTHY WEIGHT, YOU ARE
NOT OFF THE HOOK IF YOU GET PREGNANT. YOU'RE LESS LIKELY TO LOSE YOUR
BABY WEIGHT. THIS MAY EXPLAIN WHY SOME
CHILDREN BORN LATER IN THE BIRTH ORDER MAY BE HEAVIER THAN THE
FIRST WARNED. THEIR MOMS WERE HEAVIER AT THE
TIME OF CONCEPTION DUE TO THE FACT THEY NEVER LOST WEIGHT
FROM PREVIOUS PREGNANCY. A FACT EMPHASIZED ON WHAT
HAPPENS BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER PREGNANCY. ROBERT NEEDLEMAN IS A
PEDIATRICIAN WHO HAS TAKEN OVER THE WRITING OF BOOKS AND HE
KNOWS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS AFTER PREGNANCY IN THE HOME. 12% OF CHILDREN IN OHIO IN
PRESCHOOL ARE OBESE. THANKS FOR BEING WITH US TODAY. WHY IS INTERVENTION AT BIRTH
CONSIDERED TO BE ESSENTIAL? >> THE PATTERN CHILDREN FOLLOWS
IN THEIR LIFE ARE LAID DOWN IN THE FIRST FEW YEARS OF LIFE. IF YOU GET THINGS OFF TO A GOOD
START, KIDS ARE MORE LIKELY TO FOLLOW ALONG. IT IS WHY THE FIRST YEARS ARE
IMPORTANT. >> WHAT CAN PARENTS DO AT EARLY
STAGES TO GET THINGS GOING? >> ONE OF THE FIRST DECISIONS
IS BREAST-FEEDING. PARENTS NEED TO TAKE SERIOUSLY
THE FACT RUST FEEDING HAS A ROLE IN INVENTING OBESITY AND OTHER
POSITIVE THINGS AS WELL AS HELPING PARENTS LOSE THEIR
PREGNANCY WEIGHT AND GET BACK TO THEIR NORMAL WEIGHT. THE DECISION TO BREAST-FEED IS
THE FIRST DECISION AND THAT IS ONE THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED
CAREFULLY. >> I AM SURE PEOPLE ARE
THINKING, WE DO NOT HAVE THAT OPTION. THE OTHER WAYS ARE VALID. >> OF COURSE. MANY OF US GREW UP ON FORMULA. WE HAVE DONE OK BUT OVERALL,
PARENTS HAVE THE INFORMATION TO KNOW THAT BREAST-FEEDING IS A
GOOD CHOICE. >> DO YOU SEE A LOT OF
COMMONALITY? THEY DID THIS ITEM, ARE THERE
THINGS WE LOOK? >> THERE ARE SOME PATTERNS. TELEVISION VIEWING, YOUNG
CHILDREN, CERTAINLY IS ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY. YOU REALIZE HOW MUCH MONEY IS
SPENT IN SELLING UNHEALTHY FOOD TO CHILDREN. IT IS ABOUT $12 BILLION A YEAR
SPENT IN MARKETING FOODS TO CHILDREN. THAT IS NOT MARKETING APPLES AND
ORANGES, CARROTS, AND OTHER HEALTHY THINGS. THAT IS PROCESSED FOODS, HIGH IN
FAT AND SUGAR. >> KIDS ARE BECOMING PICKY
EATERS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO GO THAT WAY? >> EATING PATTERNS ARE
DETERMINED EARLY, BY AGE FOUR. PARENTS HAVE TO THINK RIGHT
AWAY, LET'S MAKE THIS AN OPTION FOR US AND THE KIDS. >> CHILDREN WILL ADOPT EATING
PATTERNS IN THEIR FAMILY. KIDS EAT DIFFERENT FROM BEIJING
ON THE FOR EXAMPLE AND THAT IS NOT BECAUSE THE CHILDREN ARE
DIFFERENT BUT THE ENVIRONMENT IS. WHATEVER IT IS THAT IS
CONSIDERED GOOD FOOD IN YOUR FAMILY IS WHAT YOU ARE LIKELY TO
GROW UP WANTING TO EAT. PARENTS NEED TO MAKE HEALTHY
DECISIONS AND WHEN A NEW CHILD COMES, THEY GROW UP WITH THAT
ENVIRONMENT. THE FLIPSIDE IS A DOES NOT MAKE
SENSE TO SAY YOU EAT HEALTHY AND WE WILL EAT OUR UNHEALTHY FOOD. IT HAS TO BE A FAMILY DECISION
AND THEN CHILDREN WILL GROW INTO A HEALTHY PATTERN. >> THINGS THAT ARE PRACTICAL
LIKE AVOIDING BIRTHDAY CAKE BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH TALKS AND
IS IN THAT. IF FOUR-YEAR-OLD IS AT A PARTY
AND ALL OF THEM ARE EATING, HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURS FROM DOING THE
SAME THING? >> NOT THAT MANY HEARTIES. UNLESS EVERYBODY IS YOUR FRIEND. BASICALLY, YOU KNOW, FOOD AT
CELEBRATION IS NOT WHERE KIDS GET INTO TROUBLE. THEY GET INTO TROUBLE WITH
SWEETS AND HIGH SALT FOOD EVERY DAY OR EVERY WEEK. SAVE THE BIRTHDAY CAKE FOR A
BIRTHDAY. IF YOU FEEL A NEED FOR COOKIES,
MAKE THEM YOURSELF AND THEN YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN
ABOUT MEASURING THINGS, GAINING SOME SKILLS AND YOU DON'T DO
THAT EVERY DAY. IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO CREATE
AN EVERYDAY FOOD ENVIRONMENT WHICH ALLOWS THE FOODS THAT ARE
THERE FOR CELEBRATION TO BE THERE FOR CELEBRATION. >> E THE EXAMPLE AND THINK
BEFORE YOU ACT. >> IT IS CALLED LEADERSHIP. WHEN PARENTS EXERT THAT POSITIVE
LEADERSHIP THEY CAN FEEL GOOD THEY ARE HELPING THEIR CHILDREN
TAKE THE RIGHT PATH. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE HAVE ESTABLISHED OBESITY IS
A BIG, COMPLEX AND SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT REQUIRES INNOVATIVE
SOLUTIONS. METABOLIC, SOCIAL, AND SOCIETAL. WE MET VICTORIA AND LEARN HOW
SOMETHING AS NINE AS BOREDOM CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OBESITY. IT REALLY SHOWED US HOW IT CAN
SHOW PROBLEMS TO INTERNAL ORGANS SUCH AS THE LIVER. WHAT THEY EAT AT SCHOOL IS A BIG
FACTOR. WE LEARN ABOUT A TRAILBLAZING
PROGRAM THAT IS MAKING MEALS HEALTHIER. JAKE SHOWED US HOW HIS FIGHT
INVOLVES SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE EXPERIMENTS IN HIS HOME AND
NEIGHBORHOOD. AND WE LEARNED IT CAN START IN
THE WOMB AND BEFORE CONSUMPTION. WE WANT TO THANK THOSE BRAVE

30 years ago I was just a child that ate nothing but candy, and to this point of life I wonder why I never end up with diabetes? now if I would eat half of sugar that I ate when I was child I would probably end up with a diabetes coma…..the answer to my question is that I used to be so active and play all day

I don't agree that it's a complex problem that requires a complex solution. The solution is a diet of whole, natural foods, mostly plants, and some daily exercise and enough sleep. That may seem simplistic, but it works because we evolved living that way. We don't need programs and calorie counting, etc… A lifestyle change and a little discipline are what is required.

When I was a (very fat, always the fattest, or second fattest) kid, nobody was fat…it was unusual for kids to be fat. Now, so many kids are fat- much fatter than I ever was as a child. Terrible eating habits and lack of exercise.. fast food and video games/ internet. I was very fat because I ate too much and I didn't run around, I read for fun.🙊

its insane how much kids dont like to go outside anymore. i was out the house any chance i got as a kid, not goin outside was a punishment. i had every video game available and we had cable so I don't wanna hear thats an excuse lol you can do all these things as a kid , you have no real responsibility besides school for most kids.

You think your hungry because on insulin spikes….eliminate sugar and carbs and eat fat/protein/veggies and you won't be hungry. Not rocket science

  • gridcaster says:

Its not complicated. eat less, move more. losing weight can be hard, but the way to do it isn't. these people love finding complicated solutions to extremely simple problems.

if you are morbidly obese and you are eating over 1500 cals a day on your "health diet" you are kidding yourself…by the time you lose any appreciable weight without seriously cutting calories you will probably have a cheat slip and gain it all back on the one day a week you eat your crappy old food. cut your calories HARD — if you are morbidly obese you can easily THRIVE on a sub-1000 calorie diet if you control your blood sugar. your life is on the line. if you are morbidly obese you need to drop your intake DRASTICALLY AND FAST. Start intermittent fasting…binge eat huge piles of non-starchy leafy green vegetables until you don't want to eat anymore. Do it for a few weeks. Weigh yourself every day, at the same time of day. Mark your progress. You will see progress. Keep going. YEARS of your life are literally on the line….stop jerking around and just do it.

Start by cooking education for these children I feel; take a professional nutrionist and go shopping with them and their families.

I do these small things with my UK Nutrition Clients:

prescribe my clients 3 main things for weight loss.
    1) Smaller plate/portions and use my Pinterest board to create healthy and fun/funky meals
    2) Foods that have themes and excite people, helping them to cook is also part of this idea
    3) I help my clients with their personal food shopping habits and allow freedom of choice, but to let them know the consequences can be very poor health wise if they don't follow my advice.

If anyone wants any tips, please email me for some free and impartial help.

Whatever happened to cooking actual food? All I remember was eating at home. Eating meals my mother, grandmother or I cooked. :/ Eating fast food was extremely rare, especially now. Fast food is expensive. One fast food meal cost $6, while with $6 I could make food for four people for two days. Beans 50 cents, two pounds of Jasmine rice $1.50 (after coupon), bag of mixed veggies $1, 12 eggs $1, and mushrooms $2. Best part real food has no taxes, while fast food I need to pay taxes. Eating healthy is/was never expensive. Fast food is far more expensive when one includes the cost in health implications.
